Big Works and Big Sound with the Carthy Organ!
Calgary, AB – October 15, 2014 – The Calgary Civic Symphony explodes into a new season marking the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I with Mars, the Bringer of War from The Planets – the orchestral suite by Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. The orchestra will perform under the baton of music director Rolf Bertsch.
Big works and big sound continue in this concert featuring the mighty Carthy organ at Jack Singer Concert Hall. Calgary’s own Neil Cockburn performs Joseph Jongen’s brilliant Symphonie Concertante for organ and orchestra. Jongen, a Belgian organist and composer, describes the work as ‘an orchestral work in which the organ is another orchestra that takes the leading role it rightly deserves’. Mr. Cockburn will surely impress the audience with what his hands and feet can do with the pipe organ!
In addition, the winner of this year’s Calgary Organ Festival will perform Saint-Saëns’ celebrated Symphony No. 3 “Organ” – the third and last of his symphonies. It is a magnificent work, with the composer saying he was writing to his limits: “I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have accomplished here, I will never achieve again.”
