Peter and the Wolf Still Popular!
Isn’t it amazing that this 1936 composition by Sergei Prokofiev is still very popular today? The Central Children’s Theatre in Moscow asked Prokofiev to compose a work for children. He loved the idea so much that it only took him four days to write the whole thing!
Numerous orchestras have performed this work over the years. Disney’s version was narrated by Sterling Holloway in 1946, and more recently the famous Elmo of Sesame Street had his musical adventure with this children’s classic.
Many significant figures in acting as well as music have enjoyed narrating Peter and the Wolf. The list includes Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, Sir John Gielgud, Sean Connery, Peter Ustinov, Captain Kangaroo, David Bowie, Itzhak Perlman, Lorne Greene, Sir Alec Guinness, Patrick Stewart, Ben Kingsley, Dame Edna Everage, Carol Channing, Sting and even Sharon Stone.
Can you see Patrick Stewart (yes of Star Trek fame!) saying: “Make it so” to the hunters as they take away the wolf!
We are delighted to have Calgary’s Mayor Nenshi narrate this year’s Children’s Christmas concert. Many in the orchestra listened to Peter and the Wolf as children, and are excited to perform it. Some of us have even read it to our own kids!
Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss this opportunity to experience this classic work in the orchestral repertoire! See you on Sunday, December 16th at the Epcor Centre!
