Are you a classical musician, eager for somewhere to perform and immerse yourself in music?
Individuals from many walks of life make up the Calgary Civic Symphony Orchestra, but we all have at least one thing in common: we are amateur musicians in the original sense of the word. Amateur is derived from the Latin term amātor, which describes an enthusiastic admirer/pursuer, devotee, or lover. We are, all of us, lovers of music and ardent in our pursuit of it. If this sounds like you, then we should talk.
If you’re interested in joining the orchestra, the best place to start is letting our executive director know you’d like to be involved, they can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our executive director will provide you with more information about the Civic and what’s required when becoming one of our members. From there, we’ll talk about attending some rehearsals and participating in an audition.
The Concertmaster holds auditions three times per year. They hold auditions for strings in September and January; and for woodwinds, brass, and percussion during the summer. When you contact the executive director about getting involved, they’ll help connect you with the next round of auditions.
Practice is a necessity, so the Civic rehearses weekly from September to June. Specifically, we hold rehearsals on Mondays from 7:30 to 10:00 pm in the Jack Singer Rehearsal Hall (205 8th Avenue SE).
Some of our rehearsals are open to a limited group of the public. We host these open rehearsals a few times each season and announce them in our newsletter. You can learn more about our open rehearsals by visiting the page here, and visiting our contact page to sign up for the newsletter to be notified of the next open rehearsal.
Fees and Dues
Unlike orchestras of paid professional musicians, our members pay an annual fee to play with the Calgary Civic Symphony. The fees make up a portion of the operational costs of the orchestra including purchase or rental of music and instruments, payment for rehearsal space, payment for concert space, and all the other costs associated with offering five performances during our season.
Fees for a one-year membership are $300. We also offer a student rate of $210. Whether you’re paying for a regular or student membership, you can pay fees in full or in two instalments. Payments are accepted online and can be made by clicking on the appropriate links below.
