Orchestra Society of Calgary
The Orchestra Society of Calgary is a non-profit organization which manages the day-to-day operations of the Calgary Civic Symphony, Calgary’s only community orchestra. Formed in 1975, the orchestra has now grown to approximately ninety musicians.
Members of the orchestra come from all walks of life. Many hold down full time jobs in careers not directly related to the performing arts, while others are professional musicians, music teachers and former members of the Calgary Philharmonic. Their common purpose – making music.
The “CIVIC”, as it is commonly referred to, is dedicated to performing serious symphonic repertoire. Each year, the orchestra presents a series of five main concerts. The orchestra will also perform educational concerts in Calgary schools.

The Symphony, originally known as “The Orchestra Society of Calgary”, was formed in 1975 by Kenneth L. Nielsen, with an initial membership of 38 musicians. In 1985, the executive of the orchestra decided to make a distinction between its main governing fund-raising body, the “Orchestra Society of Calgary”, and its performing branch the “Calgary Civic Symphony”. This allowed members of the community who were interested in cultural activities, but were not artists themselves, to become active members of the organization.
Over the years, the Civic has had the pleasure of with working with very talented music directors and guest conductors.
